🙏 SOAP DEVOTIONAL
SOAP: scripture, observation, application, prayer
Today’s SOAP Devotional by Jacob Coyne
S - SCRIPTURE: “I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but not everything is constructive.
— 1 Corinthians 10:23 (NIV)
O - OBSERVATION:
Paul is addressing the Corinthians’ mindset of freedom and rights. They were emphasizing their liberty in Christ, perhaps to the point of indulging in things that, while permissible, were not edifying. Paul reminds them that not everything that is allowed is beneficial or constructive. The essence of Christian freedom is not just about what we can do, but about what glorifies Jesus and builds up others..
A - APPLICATION:
In our walk with Jesus, the question isn’t just, “Can I do this?” but “Does this draw me closer to Him?” We are called to live above reproach, seeking what builds up our faith and strengthens our communion with the Holy Spirit. Our freedom is a gift, not for self-indulgence, but for self-denial, for choosing Him above all else.
Today, examine your heart. Are there things in your life that are permissible but not beneficial? Is there anything that might be lawful but doesn’t lead you into deeper intimacy with Jesus? Lay those things down at His feet. Choose what is best, not just what is allowed. Let the Spirit guide you in every decision, always choosing the path that leads to more of Him.
P - PRAYER:
Jesus, You are my greatest treasure. Help me to live in a way that honors You in every choice I make. Teach me to discern between what is permissible and what is beneficial. Holy Spirit, guide my steps, that I may choose the things that draw me nearer to You. I surrender my rights and my freedom to Your perfect will. Let my life be a reflection of Your love and Your glory. Amen.
What is a SOAP?
For each day of Bible reading, we do a SOAP devotional to go deeper into the word of God. We always provide an example SOAP from one of our authors, but we highly encourage you to do your own SOAP with today’s reading. God wants to speak to you personally, and will highlight a passage of today’s reading that’s just for you.
Here’s how it works:
S – SCRIPTURE
Physically write out the Bible verse
You’ll be amazed at what God will reveal to you when you
slow down to write or meditate on what you are reading!
O – OBSERVATION
What do you see in the verses you’re reading?
Who is the audience? Is there a repetition of words? What words stand out to you? What is the main lesson or theme?
A – APPLICATION
When God’s Word becomes personal
What is God saying to me today? How can I apply what I just read to my life? Are there any changes I need to make?
P – PRAYER
Pray God’s Word back to Him
If He has revealed something to you during this time in His
Word, pray about it. Confess if He has revealed some sin that is in your life. Take time to thank Him for His goodness in your life.
We hope that you took one step further in your walk with Jesus today. 🙏
