Who Will Hear the Gospel Because of You?

Why Every Christian is Called to Preach the Gospel.. To Your Neighbor or to the Nations

🙏 TODAY’S DEVOTIONAL: THE GOSPEL IS ONLY GOOD NEWS IF IT ARRIVES ON TIME

Opening Scripture:
"How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?" — Romans 10:14

Have You Ever Wondered Why God Chose You?

When you look at the brokenness of the world, it’s easy to think, “Surely God could have chosen someone better than me to carry this message.”

After all, God had other options.
He could have sent angels to declare the gospel in every tongue.
He could have painted “Jesus is Lord” across the sky in blazing fire every morning.
He could have written it in the clouds so no one could deny it.

But He didn’t.

Instead, He chose people like you.
People with weaknesses, with fears, with messy pasts and trembling lips.

Why? Because God delights in using the ordinary to display His extraordinary power.

The gospel is not just entrusted to preachers with microphones, or missionaries with passports. It’s entrusted to you. To every Christian. To every single follower of Jesus.

The Gospel Is Urgent

The sobering reality is this: not everyone will hear the gospel unless you and I open our mouths to speak it.

Paul’s words in Romans 10 ring in our ears: “How will they believe if they never hear? How will they hear if no one preaches?”

That means silence has consequences.

Not preaching the gospel won’t cost you your salvation.
But it might cost someone else theirs.

Let that sink in for a moment.
When you shrink back in fear, when you avoid the conversation, when you convince yourself, “Someone else will tell them,” you may be leaving someone in eternal darkness.

The gospel is urgent. It is life or death. And it has been placed in your hands.

Why Every Christian Is Called to Share the Gospel

Here are five biblical truths that remind us why this calling is for all of us, not just a few:

1. The Great Commission Is Not Optional

Jesus didn’t end His ministry with a suggestion. He ended it with a command: “Go and make disciples of all nations.” (Matthew 28:19)

The Great Commission wasn’t just for the apostles. It wasn’t just for professional missionaries. It was given to every believer who would follow Jesus. That means it includes you.

The moment you received the gospel, you became responsible to pass it on.

2. God Doesn’t Call the Qualified—He Qualifies the Called

Look at the people God used throughout history:

  • Moses stuttered and begged God to send someone else.

  • Jonah ran in the opposite direction.

  • Peter denied Jesus three times.

  • Paul persecuted the very church he would one day lead.

God doesn’t wait for perfect vessels to carry His message. He fills weak ones with His Spirit and sends them out anyway.

When you say, “I can’t,” God says, “I can, through you.”

3. The Gospel Is for Both Your Neighbor and the Nations

Sometimes we imagine mission only as going overseas. But mission begins at your doorstep.

It’s your coworker who feels unseen.
It’s your neighbor who is battling depression.
It’s your sibling who has wandered far from God.

At the same time, billions of people around the world still live and die without ever once hearing the name of Jesus. Entire villages, tribes, and nations have never seen a Bible or met a Christian.

The gospel is local and global. It is both/and, not either/or.

4. Silence Has Consequences

This truth cannot be softened: eternity is at stake.

If you don’t share the gospel, you won’t go to hell. But the person you refuse to tell might.

This doesn’t mean we carry the weight of saving the world—that’s God’s job. But it does mean we are responsible for obedience. We are called to be faithful witnesses, to carry the message, to open our mouths and trust the Spirit with the results.

5. You Are God’s Plan A

There is no Plan B.

The gospel spreads through ordinary believers who say yes to Jesus. It spreads when moms pray with their kids at bedtime, when students share their faith at school, when coworkers talk about Christ over lunch, when missionaries cross oceans, and when friends sit in living rooms opening Scripture together.

Every time one believer opens their mouth and says, “Jesus is Lord,” eternity shifts.

How to Begin Living This Out

Maybe you’re thinking, “Okay, I get it. But how do I actually start?”

Here are five practical ways you can begin sharing the gospel this week:

  1. Pray for one person by name. Ask God for an opportunity to share the hope of Christ with them.

  2. Tell your story. You don’t need a sermon—just share what Jesus has done in your life.

  3. Invite someone into Scripture. Even reading one chapter of the Bible together can spark transformation.

  4. Offer to pray for someone. A simple prayer can open the door for gospel conversations.

  5. Say yes if God calls you further. For some, that means a nation. For others, it means a new city or a new step of faith.

The key is this: start where you are, but be willing to go where He leads.

Encouragement for Your Calling

Maybe you still feel inadequate. Maybe you still wonder, “Can God really use me?”

Here’s the encouragement: you don’t bring the power—the gospel does.
You don’t bring the transformation—the Holy Spirit does.
Your job is obedience. God’s job is salvation.

When you take one step of courage, God takes it further than you could ever imagine.

Prayer

Jesus, thank You for entrusting me with the gospel. I confess how often I’ve stayed silent when I should have spoken. Give me courage to open my mouth and proclaim Your name to my neighbor, to my friends, and even to the nations if You call me. Here I am, Lord. Send me. Amen.

Reflection Questions

  • Who in my life needs to hear the gospel this week?

  • Have I treated the Great Commission as optional instead of essential?

  • Am I willing to say yes if God calls me beyond my comfort zone?

  • What fears keep me silent, and how can I surrender them to Jesus?

A Moment of Invitation

If this devotional stirs something in you, I want to invite you into something bigger.

From December 28th through New Year’s Eve, thousands of Christians will gather at the Urbana Conference to hear God’s call, be equipped for mission, and be sent into the world.

For decades, Urbana has been the place where God awakens callings. Missionaries, pastors, and everyday believers trace their yes back to this gathering. They came uncertain, and they left commissioned.

Today’s Sponsor: URBANA

For nearly 80 years, Urbana has been one of the most influential student missions conferences in North America, challenging and equipping young adults to step into God’s mission. The event, which only happens every three years, will continue in a new location: Phoenix, Arizona. Urbana 25 will also be led by a new Executive Director, Mark Matlock, who plans to introduce innovative programming while holding fast to the vision to inspire young people to love Jesus and go into the world as His witnesses.

At Urbana 25, Gen Z will be invited to see firsthand what is happening in the Christian church globally and discover their role in it all. This gathering, hosted by InterVarsity Christian Fellowship/USA, has a rich history of mobilizing generations of students and young adults to serve Christ in every context—whether in their local communities or across the world. For the first time, at this Urbana, all of the students will be Gen Z.

“Gen Z is stepping into the future of global missions in a way we’ve never seen before. Their passion for Jesus, authenticity, and creativity make them uniquely equipped to take the Gospel to the ends of the Earth and tackle the challenges of our time,” said Mark Matlock. “Urbana 25 is an opportunity to witness what God is doing around the world and discover how you’re uniquely designed to be part of His story.”

Urbana 2025 is designed for young adults (ages 17-28) and their leaders who are interested in discovering their place in God’s mission. This is a unique opportunity for Gen Z to connect with the global church, wrestle with big questions of faith and calling, and be equipped to make a difference.

Registration for Urbana 25 is now open. Space is limited, so early sign-ups are encouraged.
