🙏 SOAP DEVOTIONAL
SOAP: scripture, observation, application, prayer
Today’s SOAP Devotional by Jacob Coyne
S - SCRIPTURE: Isaiah 53:4-5 (NIV)
"Surely he took up our pain and bore our suffering, yet we considered him punished by God, stricken by him, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed."
O - OBSERVATION:
Isaiah 53 paints a vivid picture of the Messiah’s suffering. Written centuries before Jesus, it's almost eerie how precisely it describes what Jesus endured on the cross. He bore our pain, our failures, our sins—everything that separates us from God.
When Isaiah says, "He was pierced for our transgressions," it's like he’s staring at the crucifixion. Jesus wasn’t just a victim of injustice; He was intentionally taking on the brokenness of the world—your brokenness, my brokenness. His punishment brought us peace, and by His wounds, we’re healed.
But it doesn't stop with death. Isaiah hints at resurrection: "He will see the light of life." Jesus’ story didn't end in a tomb. Three days later, He walked out alive, victorious over sin and death. Isaiah is giving us a sneak peek of the ultimate plot twist: God’s plan was never just to stop at the cross—it was always about new life, resurrection, and hope.
A - APPLICATION:
Isaiah 53 reminds us that the gospel isn't just about avoiding hell or checking off a spiritual box. It's about a God who steps into the chaos and pain of our world, takes it all upon Himself, and offers us healing.
What’s crazy is that this was always God’s plan. From the very beginning, He knew the cross was coming, but He also knew the resurrection was right behind it. When life feels overwhelming, when we struggle with shame or brokenness, Isaiah 53 brings us back to the truth: Jesus already took all of that on Himself. We don’t have to carry it anymore.
So, how do we live in light of this? We surrender. We let go of our striving, our hustling for approval, and we rest in the finished work of Jesus. His wounds have healed us. His resurrection has given us life. And now, we live as people who are free, not because we’ve earned it, but because Jesus paid the price.
P - PRAYER:
Jesus, thank You for taking on my pain and brokenness. Help me to truly rest in Your finished work, knowing that by Your wounds, I am healed. Teach me to live in the power of Your resurrection, free from striving and full of peace. Amen.
What is a SOAP?
For each day of Bible reading, we do a SOAP devotional to go deeper into the word of God. We always provide an example SOAP from one of our authors, but we highly encourage you to do your own SOAP with today’s reading. God wants to speak to you personally, and will highlight a passage of today’s reading that’s just for you.
Here’s how it works:
S – SCRIPTURE
Physically write out the Bible verse
You’ll be amazed at what God will reveal to you when you
slow down to write or meditate on what you are reading!
O – OBSERVATION
What do you see in the verses you’re reading?
Who is the audience? Is there a repetition of words? What words stand out to you? What is the main lesson or theme?
A – APPLICATION
When God’s Word becomes personal
What is God saying to me today? How can I apply what I just read to my life? Are there any changes I need to make?
P – PRAYER
Pray God’s Word back to Him
If He has revealed something to you during this time in His
Word, pray about it. Confess if He has revealed some sin that is in your life. Take time to thank Him for His goodness in your life.
We hope that you took one step further in your walk with Jesus today. 🙏
