🙏 SOAP DEVOTIONAL
SOAP: scripture, observation, application, prayer
Today’s SOAP Devotional by Jacob Coyne
S - SCRIPTURE: James 1:2-4
"Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything."
O - OBSERVATION:
James isn’t saying to merely tolerate trials; he tells us to consider it pure joy. That seems almost unrealistic at first, but he’s pointing us to a higher reality. Trials are not random acts of suffering, but opportunities to grow in faith. They refine us, strip us of what doesn’t belong, and teach us to lean on Jesus. Through hardship, we learn to persevere, and perseverance shapes us into mature followers—people who are whole, not lacking anything in Christ. This is a call to see beyond the immediate pain to the transformation God is bringing about within us.
A - APPLICATION:
Instead of trying to escape every trial, I need to start asking, "What is God forming in me through this?" When difficulties come, I can choose to trust that God is using them to mature me, not break me. It’s in these moments, whether it’s facing rejection, feeling overwhelmed by responsibilities, or dealing with unexpected loss, that I get to know Jesus more deeply. He meets us in the struggle. Let’s invite Him into our trials, asking Him to produce perseverance in us, so we can become people of depth and unwavering faith.
P - PRAYER:
Jesus, help me to consider it joy when I face trials. I need Your strength to see beyond the pain and trust that You are using this for my good. Form in me the perseverance I need to keep following You faithfully, and make me mature, complete, and more like You. Amen.
What is a SOAP?
For each day of Bible reading, we do a SOAP devotional to go deeper into the word of God. We always provide an example SOAP from one of our authors, but we highly encourage you to do your own SOAP with today’s reading. God wants to speak to you personally, and will highlight a passage of today’s reading that’s just for you.
Here’s how it works:
S – SCRIPTURE
Physically write out the Bible verse
You’ll be amazed at what God will reveal to you when you
slow down to write or meditate on what you are reading!
O – OBSERVATION
What do you see in the verses you’re reading?
Who is the audience? Is there a repetition of words? What words stand out to you? What is the main lesson or theme?
A – APPLICATION
When God’s Word becomes personal
What is God saying to me today? How can I apply what I just read to my life? Are there any changes I need to make?
P – PRAYER
Pray God’s Word back to Him
If He has revealed something to you during this time in His
Word, pray about it. Confess if He has revealed some sin that is in your life. Take time to thank Him for His goodness in your life.
We hope that you took one step further in your walk with Jesus today. 🙏
