Today’s SOAP Devotional - By Colby F. Maier
S - SCRIPTURE: Philippians 2:5-8 (NIV)
“In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross!"
O - OBSERVATION:
This passage reveals the heart of Christ’s humility. Though He was fully God, He did not grasp at His divine privileges but instead chose servanthood. He took on human form, embraced the limitations of humanity, and humbled Himself in obedience, even to the point of a humiliating death on a cross. This is the ultimate example of selflessness, love, and sacrifice. Paul reminds us that this same mindset should define our relationships: a life of humility, service, and putting others before ourselves.
A - APPLICATION:
I must embrace humility. If Jesus, who had every right to be exalted, chose to lower Himself, how much more should I let go of pride and selfish ambition?
I am called to serve. Jesus took the form of a servant, so I should approach others with the same attitude—seeking to serve, not to be served.
Obedience requires surrender. Jesus was obedient to the Father, even when it led to suffering. I need to trust God’s plan, even when it costs me something.
Today, I will look for ways to serve, put others first, and follow Christ’s example of humility in my relationships.
P - PRAYER:
Jesus, You humbled Yourself to serve and save me. Teach me to walk in that same humility—to let go of my pride, to serve selflessly, and to obey You fully. Help me to live with Your mindset in my relationships, putting others before myself and glorifying You in all I do. Amen.
What is a SOAP?
For each day of Bible reading, we do a SOAP devotional to go deeper into the word of God. We always provide an example SOAP from one of our authors, but we highly encourage you to do your own SOAP with today’s reading. God wants to speak to you personally, and will highlight a passage of today’s reading that’s just for you.
Here’s how it works:
S – SCRIPTURE
Physically write out the Bible verse
You’ll be amazed at what God will reveal to you when you
slow down to write or meditate on what you are reading!
O – OBSERVATION
What do you see in the verses you’re reading?
Who is the audience? Is there a repetition of words? What words stand out to you? What is the main lesson or theme?
A – APPLICATION
When God’s Word becomes personal
What is God saying to me today? How can I apply what I just read to my life? Are there any changes I need to make?
P – PRAYER
Pray God’s Word back to Him
If He has revealed something to you during this time in His
Word, pray about it. Confess if He has revealed some sin that is in your life. Take time to thank Him for His goodness in your life.
