Today’s SOAP Devotional

S - SCRIPTURE: Philippians 3:7-9 (NIV)

"But whatever were gains to me I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ and be found in him…"

O - OBSERVATION:

Paul, once a man of status and religious accolades, declares that everything he once valued is worthless compared to knowing Christ. He had every reason to boast in human achievement—his lineage, education, and zeal—but he willingly discarded it all because Jesus is far greater. This chapter urges us to reject self-righteousness and worldly achievements as the basis of our worth. Instead, we are called to press on toward the ultimate prize: deep, unshakable intimacy with Jesus and the hope of resurrection.

Paul reminds us that our faith isn’t about checking religious boxes or proving ourselves. It’s about knowing Jesus, abiding in Him, and being transformed by Him. We haven’t arrived yet, but we press forward, forgetting what is behind and fixing our eyes on the eternal.

A - APPLICATION:

  • What are you holding onto that competes with the worth of knowing Christ? Is it a career, personal achievements, relationships, or even ministry success? Paul reminds us that nothing—not even good things—should take the place of Jesus as our ultimate pursuit. It’s easy to measure our worth by what we’ve accomplished, how others see us, or even how much we’ve "done" for God, but none of that matters if we aren’t found in Him.

Instead of striving for identity in our own righteousness or success, we are invited to lay it all down and receive the righteousness that comes through faith in Jesus. This means shifting our focus from performance to intimacy, from worldly recognition to eternal reward.

Press forward. Don’t live in past failures or successes. Maybe you feel stuck in regret, wishing you could undo past mistakes. Maybe you’re clinging to old victories, satisfied with where you’ve been instead of where God is leading you. Either way, Paul’s words challenge us: forget what is behind and strain toward what is ahead. The goal isn’t comfort, success, or human approval—the goal is Christ. He is worth it all.

Take time today to surrender anything that is competing with Jesus for your attention and affection. Fix your eyes on Him, knowing that nothing compares to the surpassing worth of knowing Him.

P - PRAYER:

Jesus, I lay down everything I once thought mattered and count it all as loss compared to knowing You. Help me to fix my eyes on You, to forget what is behind, and to press forward in faith. Strip away anything in my heart that competes with You, and lead me into deeper intimacy with You. May my greatest pursuit be You alone. Amen.

What is a SOAP?

For each day of Bible reading, we do a SOAP devotional to go deeper into the word of God. We always provide an example SOAP from one of our authors, but we highly encourage you to do your own SOAP with today’s reading. God wants to speak to you personally, and will highlight a passage of today’s reading that’s just for you.

Here’s how it works:

S – SCRIPTURE
Physically write out the Bible verse
You’ll be amazed at what God will reveal to you when you
slow down to write or meditate on what you are reading!

O – OBSERVATION
What do you see in the verses you’re reading?
Who is the audience? Is there a repetition of words? What words stand out to you? What is the main lesson or theme?

A – APPLICATION
When God’s Word becomes personal
What is God saying to me today? How can I apply what I just read to my life? Are there any changes I need to make?

P – PRAYER
Pray God’s Word back to Him
If He has revealed something to you during this time in His
Word, pray about it. Confess if He has revealed some sin that is in your life. Take time to thank Him for His goodness in your life.
