SOAP: scripture, observation, application, prayer
Today’s SOAP Devotional
S - SCRIPTURE: John 11:43-44 (NIV):
"When he had said these things, he cried out with a loud voice, 'Lazarus, come out.' The man who had died came out, his hands and feet bound with linen strips, and his face wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, 'Unbind him, and let him go.'"
O - OBSERVATION:
This moment is the climax of Lazarus’s story and one of the most powerful miracles we uncover in the gospel accounts. Jesus demonstrates His authority over life and death, showing that nothing is beyond His power or control. His words, “Lazarus, come out,” bring a dead man back to life, illustrating that Jesus truly is the resurrection and the life. Lazarus, once bound by death, steps out of the tomb, still wrapped in grave clothes, and Jesus commands the people around him to “unbind him.” This miracle reveals God’s glory and power, calling us to recognize Jesus as the source of true life and trust in His power over all things, even death itself.
A - APPLICATION:
In our own lives, there are areas where we may feel bound, whether by sin, shame, doubt, or circumstances that feel dead or beyond hope. Jesus’s words remind us that He has the power to call us out of those places of darkness. Just as He called Lazarus to “come out,” He calls us to step out in faith, trusting that He can bring life and freedom where there seemed to be none. We are also reminded that, like the people who unbound Lazarus, we can play a role in helping others find freedom through Christ.
Consider asking, "What in my life needs the breath of Jesus to bring it back to life?" Reflect on ways to help others walk out of their own “grave clothes,” offering encouragement, truth, and love.
P - PRAYER:
Lord Jesus, thank you for being the resurrection and the life. Help me to believe in your power over all things, including the places in my life that feel hopeless or bound. Call me out of any darkness, and give me the faith to walk in the freedom you offer. Show me how I can be a light and support to others who are seeking freedom in you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
What is a SOAP?
For each day of Bible reading, we do a SOAP devotional to go deeper into the word of God. We always provide an example SOAP from one of our authors, but we highly encourage you to do your own SOAP with today’s reading. God wants to speak to you personally, and will highlight a passage of today’s reading that’s just for you.
Here’s how it works:
S – SCRIPTURE
Physically write out the Bible verse
You’ll be amazed at what God will reveal to you when you
slow down to write or meditate on what you are reading!
O – OBSERVATION
What do you see in the verses you’re reading?
Who is the audience? Is there a repetition of words? What words stand out to you? What is the main lesson or theme?
A – APPLICATION
When God’s Word becomes personal
What is God saying to me today? How can I apply what I just read to my life? Are there any changes I need to make?
P – PRAYER
Pray God’s Word back to Him
If He has revealed something to you during this time in His
Word, pray about it. Confess if He has revealed some sin that is in your life. Take time to thank Him for His goodness in your life.
We hope that you took one step further in your walk with Jesus today. 🙏
