Half of All Christians in America Are Disobeying Jesus
Why the Great Commission Is Not Optional for Any Follower of Jesus
According to recent Barna research, only about half of Christians in America believe it is their personal responsibility to share their faith. Even fewer actually do it. These numbers are shocking when you remember that evangelism is not a side topic in Scripture. It’s the mission of God given to the people of God.
Jesus didn’t say, “If you feel comfortable, go and make disciples.”
He said, “Go and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:19).
He didn’t say, “Some of you will be My witnesses.”
He said, “You will be My witnesses” (Acts 1:8).
He didn’t say, “Preach the Gospel only if your personality fits.”
He said, “Go into all the world and preach the Gospel to all creation” (Mark 16:15).
The Great Commission is clear, simple, and universal. Every follower of Jesus is called to share the hope they have received.
Why So Many Christians Stay Silent
Barna’s research reveals a deeper crisis than low evangelism numbers. Over the last twenty years, the percentage of Christians who feel responsible to share their faith has been dropping. Some reasons are obvious:
Fear of awkwardness
Fear of offending someone
Fear of not knowing what to say
Fear of being labeled
Fear of spiritual rejection
These fears are real, but they are not stronger than the Spirit who lives inside us. Scripture promises that the Holy Spirit gives boldness, not hesitation.
“For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self control” (2 Timothy 1:7).
The Gospel Is Not a Private Treasure
Imagine if the early church had kept the Gospel to themselves. The Book of Acts would be one page long. Instead, ordinary believers carried the message everywhere they went. Farmers shared it. Tradesmen shared it. Mothers shared it. Students shared it. Prisoners shared it.
Paul wrote, “I am not ashamed of the Gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation” (Romans 1:16).
If the Gospel really is the power of God, then silence is not kindness. Silence is not humility. Silence is withholding the only message that can save a soul.
A Generation Hungry for Hope
Studies show that young adults today are wrestling with loneliness, anxiety, nihilism, and spiritual confusion at levels never seen before in American history. At the same time, Barna reports that a large percentage of people are open to spiritual conversations if someone simply initiates them with sincerity.
The harvest is not weak. The harvest is ready. Jesus said, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few” (Matthew 9:37).
The problem is not the world. The problem is the lack of laborers who are willing to be sent.
Where You Can Rekindle Your Calling
If you feel the Holy Spirit stirring you right now, pay attention. There is a gathering this December where believers from across the nation will come together to rediscover God’s heart for evangelism and mission. This event has shaped countless leaders, missionaries, and everyday Christians who were willing to say, “Lord, here I am. Use me.”
It is called Urbana 25.
This is more than a conference. It is a catalytic moment for anyone who wants to live on mission. It is a place where God has ignited movements, birthed callings, and awakened hearts for generations.

Your Next Step
If half of Christians are ignoring the Great Commission, let us be part of the half that obeys with joy and courage. The world is desperate for the hope that lives inside you. Jesus entrusted His message to ordinary people, which means He intends to use you.
You can start by taking a step that aligns your life with His mission.
You can start by going where He is sending you.
You can start by saying yes to the invitation that can shape your future.
I hope you make it to Urbana 25. This moment could mark the beginning of a new chapter in your walk with Jesus, one that moves with boldness, compassion, and the power of the Holy Spirit.
