Today’s SOAP Devotional

S - SCRIPTURE:  Mark 10:45 (NIV)

“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.”

O - OBSERVATION:

Mark 10 reveals the heart of Jesus’ mission: servanthood and sacrifice. As the disciples argue over positions of greatness, Jesus flips their understanding of leadership. He teaches that true greatness in the Kingdom of God is found in humility and service. This passage reaches its climax in verse 45, where Jesus declares His purpose—He came not to demand service but to give His life.

This chapter also highlights Jesus’ compassionate heart. From blessing little children (v. 13-16) to loving the rich young ruler (v. 21), Jesus meets people where they are and calls them to surrender everything for the sake of following Him. Whether addressing pride, wealth, or ambition, Jesus consistently points to the Kingdom’s countercultural values.

A - APPLICATION:

In a world obsessed with power, recognition, and self-promotion, Jesus' words challenge us to live differently.

True greatness isn't measured by our titles or achievements but by our willingness to serve others.

Ask yourself:

  • Who can I serve today in a way that reflects the humility of Jesus?

  • What areas of my life am I still holding back from full surrender to Him?

Jesus gave everything so we could walk in freedom and relationship with Him. He calls us to live sacrificially, prioritizing His Kingdom over our comfort or status. If we want to follow Jesus closely, we must embrace the path of humility and service, trusting Him with the rewards.

P - PRAYER:

Jesus, thank You for showing us the way of true greatness. Help me to serve others selflessly as You did and to live a life that reflects Your love and humility. Teach me to surrender everything that hinders me from following You fully. Strengthen me to choose Your Kingdom’s values over the world’s and standards. I desire to walk in Your footsteps, serving as You served and loving as You loved. Amen.

Challenge

This week, intentionally serve someone without expecting anything in return. Whether it’s a kind word, an act of generosity, or simply listening to someone’s burdens, let your actions reflect the humility of Jesus.

Closing Thought

Greatness in God’s Kingdom is found in laying down your life for others. When we follow Jesus’ example, we discover the joy and freedom of living for something greater than ourselves.

What is a SOAP?

For each day of Bible reading, we do a SOAP devotional to go deeper into the word of God. We always provide an example SOAP from one of our authors, but we highly encourage you to do your own SOAP with today’s reading. God wants to speak to you personally, and will highlight a passage of today’s reading that’s just for you.

Here’s how it works:

S – SCRIPTURE
Physically write out the Bible verse
You’ll be amazed at what God will reveal to you when you
slow down to write or meditate on what you are reading!

O – OBSERVATION
What do you see in the verses you’re reading?
Who is the audience? Is there a repetition of words? What words stand out to you? What is the main lesson or theme?

A – APPLICATION
When God’s Word becomes personal
What is God saying to me today? How can I apply what I just read to my life? Are there any changes I need to make?

P – PRAYER
Pray God’s Word back to Him
If He has revealed something to you during this time in His
Word, pray about it. Confess if He has revealed some sin that is in your life. Take time to thank Him for His goodness in your life.
