SOAP: scripture, observation, application, prayer.
Today’s SOAP Devotional by Colby F. Maier
S - SCRIPTURE: Hebrews 2:9-10
“But we see him who for a little while was made lower than the angels, namely Jesus, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make the founder of their salvation perfect through suffering.”
O - OBSERVATION:
These verses reveal the paradox of Jesus’ mission - He, the eternal Son of God, humbled Himself by taking on human nature and experiencing suffering and death. His suffering wasn’t a failure but the very means by which He was exalted and crowned with glory. Through His death, He "tasted" death for everyone, meaning He fully experienced it on our behalf. This was not only an act of sacrifice but also the path to our salvation. In God’s wisdom, suffering played a role in making Christ the perfect pioneer of our salvation, fully identifying with humanity and leading us to glory.
A - APPLICATION:
Jesus' willingness to suffer and die for us is a profound reminder that suffering has purpose in God’s plan. He didn’t avoid pain - He endured it to bring us into relationship with God. When we face trials, we can take heart that Jesus understands our struggles. His suffering wasn’t meaningless, and neither is ours. Instead of running from difficulty, we can trust that God is working through it to shape us, deepen our dependence on Him, and refine our faith.
This passage also challenges us to live with an eternal mindset. Jesus' suffering led to His exaltation - His crown followed the cross. Likewise, as believers, we are called to endure hardship with faith, knowing that our ultimate glory is with Him.
Is there an area in your life where you need to trust God’s purpose in suffering? How does knowing that Jesus suffered for you change how you endure trials today?
P - PRAYER:
Lord Jesus, thank You for humbling Yourself to suffer and die so that I might share in Your glory. Help me to trust in Your greater plan when I face trials and hardship. Remind me that suffering is not wasted, but You are using it for my good and Your glory. Strengthen my faith and help me follow Your example, knowing that the cross comes before the crown. Amen.
What is a SOAP?
For each day of Bible reading, we do a SOAP devotional to go deeper into the word of God. We always provide an example SOAP from one of our authors, but we highly encourage you to do your own SOAP with today’s reading. God wants to speak to you personally, and will highlight a passage of today’s reading that’s just for you.
Here’s how it works:
S – SCRIPTURE
Physically write out the Bible verse
You’ll be amazed at what God will reveal to you when you
slow down to write or meditate on what you are reading!
O – OBSERVATION
What do you see in the verses you’re reading?
Who is the audience? Is there a repetition of words? What words stand out to you? What is the main lesson or theme?
A – APPLICATION
When God’s Word becomes personal
What is God saying to me today? How can I apply what I just read to my life? Are there any changes I need to make?
P – PRAYER
Pray God’s Word back to Him
If He has revealed something to you during this time in His
Word, pray about it. Confess if He has revealed some sin that is in your life. Take time to thank Him for His goodness in your life.
