Today’s SOAP Devotional
S - SCRIPTURE: Luke 1:76-79 (ESV)
"And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways, to give knowledge of salvation to his people in the forgiveness of their sins, because of the tender mercy of our God, whereby the sunrise shall visit us from on high to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.”
O - OBSERVATION:
This prophecy from Zechariah reveals the mission of John the Baptist: to prepare the way for the Lord by pointing people to salvation through the forgiveness of sins. It highlights the mercy of God, who does not leave people in darkness but sends light from heaven to guide them into peace. This light is Jesus, the fulfillment of God's promise, bringing clarity, truth, and redemption to all who receive Him.
A - APPLICATION:
There are two kinds of people in this world—those who walk in spiritual darkness and those who have stepped into the light of Christ. Darkness is marked by confusion, fear, and separation from God, but Jesus came to bring light, truth, and reconciliation. Have we fully embraced that light? Do we seek Him daily to guide our steps?
If we find ourselves drifting or struggling, we need to return to the Light. God's mercy is available to all who seek Him, and His peace is found in surrender. Rather than stumbling in the shadows, we can trust Jesus to lead us into life and truth.
P - PRAYER:
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your mercy and for sending Jesus to bring light into my life. Help me to recognize the areas where I may still be walking in darkness, and lead me into Your truth. I want to follow Your way and walk in Your peace. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
What is a SOAP?
For each day of Bible reading, we do a SOAP devotional to go deeper into the word of God. We always provide an example SOAP from one of our authors, but we highly encourage you to do your own SOAP with today’s reading. God wants to speak to you personally, and will highlight a passage of today’s reading that’s just for you.
Here’s how it works:
S – SCRIPTURE
Physically write out the Bible verse
You’ll be amazed at what God will reveal to you when you
slow down to write or meditate on what you are reading!
O – OBSERVATION
What do you see in the verses you’re reading?
Who is the audience? Is there a repetition of words? What words stand out to you? What is the main lesson or theme?
A – APPLICATION
When God’s Word becomes personal
What is God saying to me today? How can I apply what I just read to my life? Are there any changes I need to make?
P – PRAYER
Pray God’s Word back to Him
If He has revealed something to you during this time in His
Word, pray about it. Confess if He has revealed some sin that is in your life. Take time to thank Him for His goodness in your life.
